Sidley Africa-Asia Agricultural Enterprise Pro Bono Program

Sidley Austin LLP is a leading international law firm with offices in Europe, the US and Asia, focusing on transactional, litigation and regulatory matters. In 2012, we began a unique program of providing free legal support to eligible African and Asian small and medium agricultural enterprises and development NGOs. Our program facilitates agricultural rural development through support to larger farmers’ cooperatives, a wide variety of agricultural supply and processing companies, and development organizations working directly with smaller farmers to expand their operations and make them sustainable, successfully access new markets and become more attractive partners for investors. Sidley provides a broad diversity of legal assistance to these enterprises and NGOs to facilitate their activities throughout the agricultural supply chain, from farming co-operatives and retailers, to suppliers of services and goods such as seed, equipment, finance and insurance. The ultimate beneficiaries of the program are small, poorer farmers and farm workers, particularly women, who labor at the bottom of the food chain.

Although our eligibility criteria is on case-by- case bases, our main criteria are;  i) the enterprise must be sufficiently small to be unable to afford international legal counsel, ii) must be based in Sub-Saharan Africa or less developed countries in Asia, and iii) the social impact of the enterprise must benefit the smallholder farmers and the rural population, with a focus on women.

We currently have 70 pro bono clients in Africa and Asia, serviced by 285 Sidley Lawyers from 16 of our 18 worldwide offices. Our lawyers mostly assist these clients in areas related to international trade barriers, negotiating investment and finance agreements, intellectual property matter, and corporate (re)structuring. Some examples of our clients include: Esoko in Ghana (https://esoko.com/) – for whom we have reviewed licensing agreements; Emerging Cooking Solutions in Zambia (http://www.emerging.se/) - for whom we have drafted shareholder agreements and employment contracts and the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (http://www.shrimpfoundation.org/) - for whom we have looked into EU safety standards and international labor law standards. Further information about our work and clients is available on our website: http://www.sidley.com/Africa-Asia-Agricultural-Enterprise-Pro-Bono-Program/.
